Wonderful time at Second Annual Unofficial LETU End of Finals Skating Night! :)

I had a very good time skating with friends! (Ask me if you'd like to see pictures and videos now, I'm waiting until I go home to make them public). I also enjoyed talking with Marlana, Nolan, Eric, and Stephen afterwards! :)

Don Francisco retains full copyright on all his work but provides chord charts and lyrics for most of his songs. In addition to this, many of his albums have been recorded sans-lyrics so that an enthusiastic fan might sing them for themselves.

In addition to this rather liberal approach to the base material, his site actively encourages it's visitors to create CDs for friends that might appreciate (the site actually says "...might be blessed...") a custom Don Francisco and Friends CD, with the limits against sale and so forth and the simple requirement that the website URL be written on each CD.

Towards the end of 2006 the members area was opened to the public with the same access that had previously been reserved for members now available to anyone. While fans are now asked to donate should they wish, it is now entirely optional and separate from access to the base material.

Bought "Rocking the Roles: Building a Win-Win Marriage"

Today I bought "Rocking the Roles: Building a Win-Win Marriage" from Lifeway in Longview, TX. I saw it while looking for "The Excellent Wife" which I found after I asked someone. ;)

Here are some of the reviews on "Rocking the Roles: Building a Win-Win Marriage":

The best of the "Christian Marriage" genre. I've read several books on marriage and this is probably the most practical. It tackles the tough questions like: Is it important to have a stay-at-home parent? What does it mean for a husband to be a servant leader? And, what does the Bible mean when it instructs women to be submissive to their husbands? My wife and I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who's interested in a Biblical perspective of modern marriage

5.0 out of 5 stars feminist convinced, July 17, 2001
By Cheryl L Krichbaum (Minneapolis, MN United States) - See all my reviews
My first marriage was a roleless marriage--one of "equality." That didn't work. The models provided to me have been traditional marriages and roleless marriages. I haven't liked what I've seen. Then I heard about the Biblical marriage and that it wasn't the traditional marriage. My boyfriend, now fiance, treats me so well and said that this was the Biblical experience. I didn't believe until I attended the Family Life marriage conference .... It was there that I learned of this book. It's convincing with sound, Biblical reasons. It explains how the S word works for both partners to be empowered and feel loved. I no longer consider submission to be allowing dominance but rather following the leader of our family. As my friend said, God asks us to do roles that are harder. I'm up for the challenge!

Notes on Simplicity from a Q3 Devo with Corey Ross soon after he survived a car accident (my Dad survied one yesterday) without harm.

I took these notes (edited some) on February 11, 2009 from Quad 3 Devos with Corey Ross who had just survived an accident without injury (my Dad was in an accident yesterday but didn't get hurt, PRAISE GOD!!):

  • Things don't matter
  • God is good
  • It's good to get caught on the first time! Shows how much God loves you.
  • Simplicity is possible.
  • Simplicity:
  • Uncluttered
  • Abstain from participating in activities or possessions which are extraneous and don't further God's purposes
  • Trains us in self-denial
  • When we die to self, we can reorient ourselves to God's purposes.
  • Prioritize and cut out non-priority items.
  • Josh (Lubbers?): What's really important in life, and it's important to you: God, People, Bible
  • Matt 6:19-21 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth... F0r where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
  • Things are temporary.
  • What's important?
  • If wife and kids: must have job.
  • Or, can be more free to take pay cut.
  • Are the choices we make in things and time wise? Will they make us focus more on earth?
  • What are some objects, goals, lifestyle choices that become treasures on earth, that you have stored up?
  • How do these things complicate your life?
  • What is your motivation for possessing, thinking, or doing that?
  • e.g. T.V. "I start crafting life based on watching TV."
  • "I want people to think I'm cool, status issue involved."
  • One thing that's sinful for me may not be sinful for you based on motivation.
  • e.g. Movies: "I wantd people to come to me [to get them]."
  • How do these treasures get destroyed or stolen?
  • breaks
  • lose interest (and you've spent so much time, energy)
  • That which is keeping us from God ends up losing in ...
  • e.g. business: focusing on what we do vs what God is doing.
  • Simplicity: allows us to shift our focus to God.
  • Store treasures in heaven
  • Matt 6:22-24
  • How are we full of light when eye of our soul has a single focus?
  • Eye will be full, if single focus. Nothing else can be put...
  • It is impossible to serve 2 masters.
  • When we try to serve 2 masters we experience failure, stress, loss of abundant life.
  • Matt 6:33
  • C.S. Lewis: "When you focus on the primary things, the secondary things come with it. When you focus on secondary, you get none."
  • e.g. Primary: Draw me to God
  • Secondary: If you want to use me to bring my son back to You, I am available.
  • Else focus becomes on secondary: My feelings
  • Thing about things you pray for that are secondary: health, grades, etc.
  • If focused 1st on God and receiving Kingdom, you either get others or realize they don't matter.
  • Simplicity:
  • 1. Have a clear and uncomplicated purpose
  • 2. Be deliberate about focusing on Him.
  • 3. Minimize things and activities that distract you from seeking Him.
  • Is God calling you to one of these things?
  • TV is distracting, not rest.
  • (Note: I am not so sure about this.)
  • If it means focussing on God (e.g. school), focus on it.
  • We start...
  • Don't be in 4 clubs, be in 1.
  • Don't take 20 hours, take 14.
  • So you can live life.
  • Sacrifice
  • Maybe working extra
  • Not easy, but may be right
  • Friends or advisers may be wrong.
  • Forge path, live simply say won't
  • Don't let other people mock you for taking 12 hours.
  • Puritans lived as though they stood before an audience of 1.
  • Homework: take a look your room, look at the things that you truly treasure. Things you would mourn if you didn't have.
  • 1. Why do you treasure it?
  • 2. What would happen within you to be willing to give it up?
  • Review your weekly schedule.
  • Why am I doing these things?
  • What would have to happen to start giving up these things?
  • "I don't come to you in victory. I am convicted."

Prayer Request

Dear Reader,

I have a lot of research, thinking, praying, and decisions to make in the next year.

Please pray for me to use my time effectively this summer as I do research on important issues related to the Biblical role of husbands and wives and seek to come to a better understanding of how the roles can be applied in real life. Please pray that I will make wise decisions and come to the correct conclusions.

Thanks!

Ordered: "The Christian Family" by Larry Christenson

It's been on my to do list for weeks to order this very good, old book for my sister and brother-in-law, Miriam and John. I've finally done it. :)

From: http://www.amazon.com/Christian-Family-Larry-Christenson/dp/087123114X/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1240861562&sr=8-2

Product Description
America's Favorite Book on the Family

Over 1,215,000 copies of The Christian Family have been sold in the United States alone since the first edition was published in 1970. And it has been translated into nine other languages!

Why such popularity?

Perhaps some of the many favorable comments the book has received through the years will answer that question:

"The Christian Family takes the time to explain God's plan for the family and how He intends that it be carried out."

Pulpit Helps

"The best I have ever read on the subject."

David Wilkerson

"If there is a better book on the subject, I haven't read it."

David Otis Fuller

"He encourages parents to exercise their priesthood and presents an abundance of ways to enrich daily family worship."

Catholic New Covenant

"The author manifests a sound grasp of biblical principles, a sympathetic understanding of human nature, and insight into the spirit of the present age."

Asbury Seminary Herald

Ordered another copy of "Strike the Original Match" by Charles R. Swindoll

Today I've been reading some of the 1980 version of "Strike the Original Match" by Chuck Swindoll which, if I remember correctly, I got free from the free book box at Hope Fellowship (along with another very good book "The Christian Family" by Larry Christenson).

I've just ordered another copy.

This book is packed with so much excellent advice! The best thing about it is it's source - our main Handbook for Life, the Bible. This book gives us the practical applications for the principles that God has given us in His Word, so that we can experience His best for us. I've heard so many people wish for an instruction book when encountering one of life's biggest or most important experiences, and I can heartily recommend this book as an excellent instruction book for having success in your marriage experience. It is as simple as putting the principles to work with a sincere, whole heart. Study it - chapter by chapter, alone or with your spouse - and let your marriage be transformed!

A Passionate Plea for Restoring Family As The Social Contract of Society

Elijah Lofgren

Longview, TX

First Draft: April 26, 2009

Last Revised: April 27, 2009

Thoughts regarding restoring the
Family as the social contract of society1

Secularism2 has deluded us into removing family from its huge place of importance.

Church
health seems to directly depend on family health.

We need a radically different approach to family, and vocation. A new family-centered approach will likely directly impact the church for the better.

We need to stop focusing on symptoms and look at our entire approach.

By splitting apart the family, our society has broken apart the very institution which allows our society to be healthy.

In general, we send our kids out to school and daycare, then Mom goes out and gets a job, Dad comes home 10 hours later and everyone who has lived separate lives for a majority of their time come together and go their separate ways. Little Johnny goes to turn on the latest TV show showing teen sex. Dad sits down to watch the latest game. Mom hurriedly washes clothes, makes supper, and feeds these occupants of her house and wonders why she feels so drained of energy.

Husband and wife wonder why they no longer have fuzzy feelings for the stranger that they
share a bed with. This scenario may represent millions3 of families in the US today. And it's not getting better folks. The rate of divorce and teenage pregnancies are much higher than they
should be.

Insanity: doing the same thing and expecting different results.

We need a radically different approach to the current method of raising a family, working, and educating our children. The time has come to restore the family as the social contract of society.

People are sometimes viewed as products of their environment. People are extremely influenced by the societal structures and customs to which they are exposed and often embrace.

Our society is broken.

Band aids won't work anymore. We need to do major surgery on our basic approach to family, home, and education.

A transformation of the family will have a dramatic effect on the huge problems facing the church, the government, and our society today.

I have just ordered "The Choice" on the recommendation of Marlana. I don't read much fiction, so it probably won't be hard to get through it. :)

What I believe leads to a life that has great potential for genuine fulfillment, forgiveness, and eternal life. What's so good about what you believe?

I read this today:

From "Discover the Power of One" by Michael Youssef, PhD

"...The world in which we live is established on false beliefs and anti-Christian values, but it's a materially excellent world. Can such a luxurious world be so bad? Can things that make you feel so good be wrong?

Just as Daniel and his friends eventually concluded, we must conclude that the pleasure and opulence of the world are a facade. The environment underneath the surface enticements is an environment that is hostile to Christ, not just indifferent to Christ. Although the world demands tolerance from Christians, the world isn't tolerant of Christians! The world insists that Christians become less judgmental, less righteous, less of their faith and their relationship with God, less certain of their evaluations of right and wrong. The pressure is often intense to become less Christian-- never is the pressure of the world to become more pure, more faithful or moral.

The glitz and glamour and bright lights of the world might blind a person temporally. The offer of pleasure may seem genuine and overpowering at times. But underneath is the seamy side of sin. It is a side the devil never shows right away--the side that leads to decay, destruction, and death. Sin doesn't reveal its hard edge initially, but the edge is always there. In Babylon, things may have appeared pleasurable and pleasant for the young captives, but underneath the surface was evil intent.

...
...We are called as Christians to challenge what other people hold as the status quo and the 'politically correct' belief. We are called as Christians to challenge any opinion or belief that does not exalt the Lord!

Rather than roll over and play dead when others criticize you for believing in God and advocating a godly way of living, rise up and say, 'What's so good about what you as a non-Christian believe? What I believe leads to a life of inner peace, purpose, joy, and satisfaction. What I believe leads to a life that has great potential for genuine fulfillment, forgiveness, and eternal life. What's so good about what you believe?"

"Compromise in Marriage: Yes or No?" + HSA => 15 pages

Dear reader,

I just finished reading some of the 15 page "Compromise in Marriage: Yes or No?" thread on HSA. You can see MANY quotes from Marlana and Tsheej from the thread here: http://family.elijahlofgren.com/
They both told me I could quote any of their writing that I wanted to:

Now that I've finished that (and learned much!) I will now finally take a break from HSA and do some other things. I have MUCH to think about. I'm quite inspired to find people that express things so passionately! May God make me as passionate about each thing that is truly important and the wisdom to know what isn't.

Do you have any thoughts about this?

"I am not skilled to understand What God has willed, what God has planned I only know at His right hand, stands One who is my Saviour..."

I am not skilled to understand
What God has willed, what God has planned
I only know at His right hand, stands One who is my Saviour, save me
I take Him at His word and deed
Christ died to save me, this I read
And in my heart I find a need
Of Him to be my Saviour, to save me

"Maybe that's the message of the Bible: Preach Jesus at any cost."

"Maybe that's the message of the Bible: Preach Jesus at any cost." - (I don't think this is the exact wording) -- Dr. Larry Crabb, Heard on KLOVE today.

Do you agree with this? => "Next Social Contract: Principles Paper - A Family-Based Social Contract"

Yesterday, I read a draft of some of the beginning/introduction to the book that Marlana is co-authoring about the family being the social contract of society and discussed some of it with her.

Today, I searched Google for "family being the social contract of society"
and found this:
http://www.newamerica.net/publications/policy/family_based_social_contract

Executive Summary

Americans instinctively revere the family as an institution that helps facilitate all other aspects of life. The family fosters attachments across generations, provides a nurturing environment in which to raise children, and is a means of transmitting values from one generation to the next. It is the foundation upon which our social contract has been built.

Historically, public discussions of the social contract have largely ignored the role of families. In a pre-industrial world in which children both performed economically useful tasks while young and, as adults, offered vital support to their aging parents, it was easy to assume that the family as an institution could be relied on to take care of itself.

Today, however, the economic basis of the family is largely eroded. Children are no longer economic assets to their parents, but costly liabilities. Due to the growth of Social Security, Medicare, and private pension schemes, support in old age no longer depends on an individual’s decision to raise a family, but on other people bearing the burdens of parenthood so as to produce the vital human capital to keep the system going. Meanwhile, the widening life options of a secularized society raise the opportunity cost, for both men and women, of nurturing the next generation.

One result of these changed circumstances, in all advanced nations, has been a dramatic fall in birthrates, often to well below replacement rates, and rapidly aging populations. At the same time, the state of family life has become deeply problematic, with high rates of divorce and out-of-wedlock births, and increasing downward mobility among parents.

Other sectors of society have effectively appropriated for themselves much of the value in human capital created by families, contributing to the strain on parents and a decline in overall fertility rates. Public policy and current law stacks the odds against those who choose to raise children.

We need to make major adjustments to the social contract in order to allow parents to retain more of the return that comes to society through their investment in children. Because stable families make a great difference in the lives of children, the next social contract should support them. Because having and raising children is a public good, the next social contact should focus on supporting parents and children as early in life as possible.

...

Read the rest here: http://www.newamerica.net/files/family_based_social_contract.pdf

After printing it out and reading it today, I agree with most if not all of it. Our government policy needs to encourage a positive attitude towards children.

Do you agree with it?

I'm not ALONE! There are other extreme counter-culturalists out there!

I started to put some stuff into words, but it wasn't coming out right. Maybe during the summer I'll write more original stuff.

So instead, here are two examples of people that hold non-mainstream views who I agree with (at least I think I agree with all these quotes):
I'm curious, do you find anything in the above quotes that you disagree with or think is wrong?

Thanks for your feedback!

"Our church and seminary communities have too often become polite societies with strict rules of etiquette designed to maintain our denial of who..."

"Until we have the courage to drop our guard and honestly face the tensions, lusts, resentments, and fears that are eating away at us inside, we will never understand the extent to which the Scriptures apply to life. Until them, our feeble attempts to tack an application to the end of our expository sermons reach no one deeply; worse, they are harmful because they tell people who are hurting that the church has no answers, that for help with 'those kinds of problems' they must go to a professional.

Our church and seminary communities have too often become polite societies with strict rules of etiquette designed to maintain our denial of who we really are and what problems we are facing. The result is a stiff, cold orthodoxy that squeezes the very life out of Scripture.

Only the 'words' of God can be understood in a seminary or a scholar's stud. To grasp the 'message' of God we must take our understanding of the text and move deeply into the lives of ourselves and others, admitting confusion, praying for wisdom, sticking rigidly with only the essentials of our faith, and thinking openly about everything else."

HSA Funny video

"No sex in Slumdog"

From http://online.worldmag.com/2009/01/06/no-sex-in-slumdog/:
I got a movie gift card for Christmas so we saw Slumdog Millionaire. It hit me like a Mack truck. I also learned a thing or two about India off the tourist track. I grew in admiration for a female friend of mine who is a missionary in the slums of Uttar Pradesh. And now I know that the Hindu god Rama holds a bow and arrow in her hand, in case I ever get asked on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
Something I learned that didn’t strike me till after I got back home is that director Danny Boyle managed to make a film with no sex scenes in it—and it worked just fine. If ever there was a movie that called for sex scenes, it’s Slumdog. There is plausibility at every stage of the story—from the anti-Muslim raid during Salim and Jamal’s childhood, to gangster Maman’s orphanage, to the tourist-hustling period at the Taj Mahal.

"You have to know what you believe before you can know what you should do with your life." -- Chris
Note: New quotes tag "Marlana and Chris" for quotes from conversations with Marlana and Chris.

Elated and Ecstatic! :)

Thanks for Nolan for giving me the idea for the title of this blog post! :)

Background:

Let's start by quoting http://poetry.elijahlofgren.com/2009/04/joy.html
Have you ever been crazy happy
I mean more than you've ever been before?

Will it last?
No! Of course this high emotion will soon be past.

However, the circumstances that created this temporary happiness
Will likely happen again.

Something good happened this morning
It swept away all my temptations of mourning

Also, I went to something tonight
It's called LeTourneau University Reformation Fellowship

I'm so glad I went
It almost seems heaven sent.

However, am I just to emotional?
Should I go write a motivational devotional?

Emotions are amazing
And they can be invigorating

Emotions go up
Emotions go down

Joy is found in God alone

I've been depressed before
I didn't even want to go out the door

But God is faithful

No matter what you go through
God will somehow help you through

I can't comprehend God
He does things I don't understand

Right now I know where I stand
I'm right in the palm of His loving Hand

Here it goes:

Tonight was the second time I went!
And again we don't know where the time went!

LURF ended, but the conversation was just getting started!
I'm truly running out of words, so I'll think I'll stop writing this poem before I even get started.

I'll end by posting the song I've sang this and last Thursday (after talking to Marlana and Chris) :) :) :)

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
For our Lord God Almighty reigns
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
For our Lord God Almighty reigns
Hallelujah
Holy, Holy
Are you Lord God Almighty
Worthy is the Lamb
Worthy is the Lamb
You are holy

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
For our Lord God Almighty reigns
Hallelujah
Holy, Holy
Are you Lord God Almighty
Worthy is the Lamb
Worthy is the Lamb
You are holy, holy
Are you Lord God Almighty
Worthy is the Lamb
You are holy

Why are you still looking for love? Why are still searching as if I'm not enough?

"Have you ever been too weak, too weak to stand, to weak to even try and understand Every tear, every pain inside..."

"Have you ever been too weak, too weak to stand, to weak to even try and understand
Every tear, every pain inside
Have you ever been knocked down, broken and tired, slipping away, losing the fire,
Stuck in your life, can’t ever seem to move on
You don’t have to be the one who see the way this all will end

All you got to do is take the next step, come on come on, and take the next step
When your losing the fight and the finish line’s too far away
All you got to do is take the next step just get back up and take the next step
Deep in your soul there’s a strength just to face one more day
Just take the next step"

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes...

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes.”

A Poem About... Waiting

Now, why didn't I actually work at putting waiting into practice before today?

From: http://poetry.elijahlofgren.com/2009/04/waiting.html

A person must learn to wait
But often patience is a hard trait

"Come! Let's do it now!"
"Don't wait, or consider how!"

Everything good takes time
For I must wait for what I want to be mine

"Give it to me now!"
Hunger, however, requires a plow

In my mind I know I must wait
Joy in waiting is an amazing trait!

Knowing people takes time
Lord, help me submit to your will not mine

Modern life: We run to and fro
Not wanting to wait for where we want to go

O Lord! Please help me!
Please help me to wait on Thee!

Questions flood my mind
Responses I LONG to find.

Stop! O, my soul!
Trust in God and be whole.

Under Thee, O Lord, I place myself
Visit me and draw me to Thyself.

When I go through testing
Xchange my impatient for patient resting

You, O Lord complete me
Zilch, Nada, Nothing, am I without Thee.

"I’m waiting on You, Lord Though it’s not easy..."

Some of the words (from http://joy-ziegler.blogspot.com/2009/01/while-im-waiting.html):
I will move ahead, bold and confident
Taking every step in obedience

While I’m waiting
I will serve You
While I’m waiting
I will worship
While I’m waiting
I will not faint
I’ll be running the race
Even while I wait

I’m waiting
I’m waiting on You, Lord
And I am peaceful
I’m waiting on You, Lord
Though it’s not easy, no
But faithfully, I will wait
Yes, I will wait

Aha! I understand better why some people don't want facebook!

"I just can't have a facebook and not read all the feed. :)" -- M.D.

My roommmate, my apartment-mate, 3 of my friends, and others don't have facebook. Some of them refuse to get a Facebook account because almost everyone else does. Reading the above quote from someone I met on Thursday, I suddenly understand these people more. They must have a stronger urge to keep up with everything. ;)

When the daylight's gone, and you're on your own And you need a friend, just to be around... I'll be at your side...

The Corrs - At Your Side:
When the daylight's gone, and you're on your own
And you need a friend, just to be around
I will comfort you, I will take your hand
And I'll pull you through, I will understand
And you`ll know that...

I'll be at your side
There's no need to worry
Together, we'll survive
Through the haste & hurry
I'll be at your side, if you feel like you're alone
And you've nowhere to turn
I'll be at your side

If life's standing still, and your soul's confused
And you cannot find what road to choose
If you make mistakes (make mistakes)
You won't let me down (let me down)
I will still believe (still believe)
I will turn around
And you know that

I'll be at your side
There's no need to worry
Together we'll survive
Through the haste and hurry
I'll be at your side
If you feel like you're alone
And you've nowhere to turn
I'll be at your side

I'll be at your side
I'll be at your side
You know that

I'll be at your side
There's no need to worry
Together we'll survive
Through the haste and hurry
I'll be at your side, if you feel like you're alone
You've got somewhere to go
I'll be at your side

I'll be at your side
I'll be right there for you
(Together we'll survive)
Through the haste and hurry
I'll be at your side, if you feel like you're alone
You've got somewhere to go
'Coz I'm at your side
Yeeeah, I'll be right there for you
I'll be right there for you yeah
I'm right at your side
For E.

I'll keep the light on for you........

I know you keep a journal and every page is rippled
From the tears that you cry, ain't no meanin' to your scribble
Cause words can't describe what you've been feelin' inside
It's like thousand foot walls, and they're still on the rise

But look up to a beautiful sound
And see for yourself you're not that far down
And know this, I cannot love a little
My promise to you is unconditional

And I'll keep the light on for you,
Just keep the course, you can weather the storm
I'll keep the light on for you,
You've come this far, don't you ever lose heart, now

Just turn around and I'll be there
I'm moving into your atmosphere
Just turn around and I'll be there
I'm moving into your atmosphere

I know you're all alone in a crowd of your friends
I can see it in your eyes that your fadin' again
Checking out, moving into your hole
Where the light can't touch any part of your soul

But hold up and let the river rush in
You can turn around and start livin' again
Cause your life is a beautiful bloom
In the image of the one that created you
And I'll keep the light on for you,
Just keep the course, you can weather the storm

I'll keep the light on for you,
You've come this far, don't you ever lose heart, now
Just turn around and I'll be there
I'm moving into your atmosphere

Just turn around and I'll be there
I'm moving into your atmosphere
I'll be there
Said I'll be there, said I'll be there
Said I'll be there always, forever
Just turn around and I'll be there,
I said I'll be there always forever
I'm movin' into your atmosphere

Stop the World - Matthew West

How to affect change on the pro-life issue?

I've joined a small group of people on campus who are currently praying and researching ways to affect change on the pro-life issue. We don't want to be associated with some of the less effective, possibly unhelpful pro-life activities. We plan to start with prayer and if God shows us something to do, we'll hopefully do it.

Please pray that we will have wisdom as we research ways to possibly influence moderates, possibly through non-violent protests (similar to how non-violent protests were done to help influence people to affect change on cival rights).

We know we can't change everyone, but as one of my friends said, we could maybe influence 30-40 in a town.

Any thoughts on how to affect change?

Edit: We plan to read, research and pray this summer and have regular meetings next semester.

Voice Of A Savior - Mandisa

Choosing a History Course for the Summer?

Update: I've decided not to take a summer course because I'll be moving to Cedar Rapids for the summer during that time. Thanks to Dad and Maria for their input. :)

If I'm going to take an online History course, I need to register soon!!

I start at Rockwell on May 18th, so this isn't the most convenient timing. However, I think I could probably still make it through and it would then free up time for my last semester at LETU. :)

I think I'll try to register today or Friday.

Any suggestions? Dad, what do you think? Rockwell Collins should pay for it (I'll double-check this before I do it).

Happy Birthday Jubilee! :)

Today is my sister Jubilee's birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Jubilee! :)

Next 5 Minutes

Praise the LORD, O my soul!

Psalm 103 (New International Version)

Psalm 103
Of David.
1 Praise the LORD, O my soul;
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

2 Praise the LORD, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits-

3 who forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases,

4 who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,

5 who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

6 The LORD works righteousness
and justice for all the oppressed.

7 He made known his ways to Moses,
his deeds to the people of Israel:

8 The LORD is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.

9 He will not always accuse,
nor will he harbor his anger forever;

10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve
or repay us according to our iniquities.

11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his love for those who fear him;

12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

13 As a father has compassion on his children,
so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;

14 for he knows how we are formed,
he remembers that we are dust.

15 As for man, his days are like grass,
he flourishes like a flower of the field;

16 the wind blows over it and it is gone,
and its place remembers it no more.

17 But from everlasting to everlasting
the LORD's love is with those who fear him,
and his righteousness with their children's children-

18 with those who keep his covenant
and remember to obey his precepts.

19 The LORD has established his throne in heaven,
and his kingdom rules over all.

20 Praise the LORD, you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his bidding,
who obey his word.

21 Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts,
you his servants who do his will.

22 Praise the LORD, all his works
everywhere in his dominion.
Praise the LORD, O my soul.

Magnificent Obsession

Amen.

For the Sake of The Call!

West Africa Pictures! :)

Good memories! http://www.elijahlofgren.com/pictures/west-africa/

I truly didn't appreciate the experience at the time as I do now. I was able to get just a little taste of a very different culture. It was HOT!!! there.

I want to go back to somewhere in Africa or the Middle East in the next 5-10 years (after I hopefully start trying to learn Arabic).

More - Matthew West

I'm listening to this on the radio as I eat supper and the hopefully finally start taxes. I've decided to skip Prayer and Praise and try to get taxes and a one-sit reading of Nahum-Zephaniah done (or at least started).

I'm realizing I do need to prioritize sleep and start trying to say no more often. I'm feeling tired.

No matter what, God is good!

1.414214.com - Smarter News

I just attended an LETU ACM presentation at LeTourneau University by Drew Crawford (a fellow LeTourenau student) and 2 other members of his company.

They presented on this cool website: http://1.414214.com/
  • They use GWT for several puzzles internally.
  • For creating puzzles in Python.
    • abstractPuzzle interface.
      • Fine control over GET and POST requests.
      • Detailed communication with sickle engine.
        • Their algorithm will decide how easy and hard your puzzle is automatically.
        • You can give partial and extra credit in the puzzles.

Drew used the Komodo IDE which I enjoyed using. http://www.activestate.com/komodo/

Further applications?
The mentality for the site:
  • Comments of any length
  • Markup language. :)
  • You can edit your comments!

  • Drew:
    • We're all really really busy, and yet over lunch. After a while you sorta burn out from coding. You need to think of something creative to recharge.
    • You might think up the answer in the middle of the night.
    • The type of people they want to attract are the type of people that enjoy solving puzzles.
    • Resister lattice puzzle is several months of work.
    • Undocumented feature: People that are good contributors may be given sickles just for logging in.
    • We support timed puzzles:
      • You can easily stored date puzzle was first accessed and look at that.

Want to rank your site higher?
  • They may eventually have good pagerank and they allow you to link to your site in your profile.

This. Is. Cool! :)

It's Going To Be Alright

"Thai fireman in 'spider-man' rescue of autistic boy"

From "Thai fireman in 'spider-man' rescue of autistic boy":
BANGKOK (AFP) – A Thai fireman turned superhero when he dressed up as comic-book character Spider-Man to coax a frightened eight-year-old from a balcony, police said Tuesday.

"The road goes ever on and on..."

Copied from SUITE Deal: The road goes ever on and on...:

Where is your road leading? Down a lane such at this or a hot dusty path?
Do you see the next bend or does it seem to stretch straight on to the horizon?
Are you prepared for whatever comes by on your way?
What is your help?
Where is the spring for water? Where does your food come from?
When other paths cross yours, will you turn aside?
If other travelers meet you, as they follow their paths, will you invite them to travel along side you as a welcome companion?
And when the winds come and blow in your face, will you close your eyes and smile or will you squint and complain?
What is your greatest fear along this way?
What do you hope to find at the end of the road? Why are you traveling?
